Project Description: Johnston Construction Company was an integral part of the design-build team providing engineering interface, construction, and commissioning services for the $4,137,000 private-bid fixed price contract. The project involved the construction of a new 0.23 MGD wastewater treatment facility to serve the new Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course as well as neighboring hotels located in Grantville, PA. The treatment facilities include a screen chamber, metering chamber, influent pump station, two Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR), digester basin, blower building, equalization tank, filter building, chlorine contact tanks, dechlorination chamber, cascade aeration system, operations building and reuse water storage tank.
Major equipment items were necessary to meet treatment requirements. The operations building is a pre-engineered metal building constructed to house certain equipment and controls. The SBR system and Tertiary Disc Filter system were manufactured by Aqua Aerobics both with an average flow capacity of 0.4 MGD and maximum flow capacity of 0.73 MGD. Pumping facilities include: an influent pump station with 20 HP, 550 GPM duplex suction lift pumps; equalization pumps that include two submersible pumps rated at 5 HP and 600 GPM; and, one sludge transfer pump that is a 15 HP, 300 GPM double disc type pump. A 150,000 gallon capacity stainless steel reuse water storage tank was also constructed. Since the construction site of the new wastewater treatment facility was in close proximity to the horse stables, construction noises had to be minimized and, in some cases, construction activities were stopped during horse training sessions. The project was started in December 2005. Final design, construction, and performance testing was completed in December 2006.
